Zoos Victoria

The organisation at a glance

Zoos Victoria is a world-leading conservation organisation dedicated to protecting wildlife from extinction. Our four zoos – Healesville Sanctuary, Kyabram Fauna Park, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo – offer unforgettable experiences that connect people with wildlife from around the world. We are committed to creating welcoming, accessible and inclusive experiences for all staff and visitors. Through education programs, breeding and recovery efforts, conservation partnerships and community support, we inspire people to care for wildlife and help protect animals and their habitats for future generations.

Commitment to Inclusion

At Zoos Victoria, we believe everyone should be able to access and enjoy our zoos. We are committed to supporting the needs of all staff and visitors, regardless of their circumstances.

We strive to create a diverse workforce where everyone feels welcome, included and valued.

Our Disability and Inclusion Action Plan (DAIP) provides our people with equal opportunities to bring their whole self to work or when they visit us and feel safe and valued.

Our DAIP is built around the four pillars of Belonging; Inclusion; Equity and Diversity.

ZoosVic – Access and Inclusion at Zoos Victoria

Inclusion in practice

At Zoos Victoria, we are committed to creating a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment for everyone, including people with disability.

Inclusive and Diverse Organisation

We are working to create more employment opportunities for people with disability and to build staff understanding through ongoing learning and development. We are improving accessibility across all Zoos Victoria sites and reviewing our recruitment and employment processes to remove barriers that may prevent people from participating or applying for roles.

Accessibility

We aim to make all new buildings and infrastructure accessible by using universal design principles. We are also continually improving accessibility across our existing sites. We value the diversity of our workforce and are committed to ensuring that all employees and volunteers can contribute their skills and experience in a workplace that is inclusive, respectful, and free from discrimination.

 Visitor and Employee Experience

We strive to provide experiences that reflect the diversity of our communities and are accessible to everyone. This includes improving signage, maps, information, programs, and digital resources so they are easy to access and available in different formats. Our Workplace Adjustment Policy supports employees and volunteers by providing processes to meet individual needs and create an inclusive workplace where differences are valued.

Communication and Engagement

We are committed to making information easier to access and ensuring our communication is inclusive. We work closely with people who have lived experience of disability, as well as disability specialists, through our External Disability Inclusion Advisory Group, our internal Access and Inclusion Working Group, and other expert partnerships.

Training and Development

We continue to build our organisation’s understanding of disability through education and training. Wherever possible, training is delivered by people with lived experience and includes topics such as neurodiversity in the workplace and autism awareness. This helps us create a more inclusive environment for employees, volunteers, and visitors.
